Episode 102 - Organic Growing
Eco Company gets down to earth in this episode, quite literally. Jessica learns how restaurant scraps are collected to provide the nitrogen and wonderful nutrients needed to make compost. It's compost that goes back to farms and wineries to grow our food and produce. Nothing wasted and all is goes right back into the soil.
Then Adam reports on a group of high school students in Santa Cruz, CA, who are reaping the rewards of their labor by eating what they they are growing in their organic garden. But they are not just learning the process of growing foods organically, they are also learning how the many of the decisions they make everyday affect the environment.
Jordon's on on the scent of the flower business and it's big business in the U.S. But most growers use pesticides to control pests. However Jordon found one grower using good bugs to control bad bugs in order to grow their flowers sustainably.
Finally Brendan takes us to a high where students have made a difference in a program called S.P.A.R.E., Students Promoting Awareness of Recycling and the Environment. They have created a place for students to hangout surrounded by a garden of native plants AND they run the schools recycling program...and make money for their projects in the process!
